Device to check illegal trade of rare species
Scientists have developed a new device that will facilitate customs inspectors to do on-the-spot testing and checking for illegal trade in endangered species. The device, actually a dna-kit, has been developed by British dna forensics specialists. It aims to combat the use of tissues from protected animals, especially bile juice from bears, in traditional medicines.
The device works on a similar technology used to test pregnancy. It detects specific proteins found in the goods, and will thus help customs officials to test suspicious goods on the spot and determine whether they contain ingredients from species protected under international trade laws.
Trials of the dna-test kit in Australia and Canada have identified 16 cases of illegal products.
