MAKING ACCOUNTABLE

The Supreme Court of Nepal has issued a mandamus to the government for controlling the quality of the water resources and setting standards for curbing pollution. The court's decision comes a year after a writ petition was filed by Bhoj Raj Ayer of Pro-Public, a grassroots organisation, alleging that the quality of water should be in accordance with the Water Resources Act and the Environment Protection Act. The mandamus has grave significance for the county, where almost all the waterbodies are facing bacterial pollution problem. In urban areas like Kathmandu lack of quality drinking water is even hampering tourism.
