Controversial committees
Many of the committees set up by moef to review the 1991 notification have drawn flak from environmentalists, who say they have weakened the notification, making way for various tourism projects.
B B Vohra committee in January 1992 recommended cutting down the distance of ndz in selected coastal stretches for tourism promotion.
MoEF issued a suitable amendment on August 18, 1994, which was later quashed by the Supreme Court.
In 1996, the N Balakrishnan Nair committee suggested crzs could be used for storing petroleum products. It also recommended locating non-polluting industries in CRZ.
