Oil of misery

THE homeland of the Ogonis - Nigeria - has yielded yet another sizable reserve of oil, this time below the waters off its coasts. Royal Dutch/Shell, which conducts major oil exploration operations in the country, confirmed the off-shore find on March 11. The find was in an area called Bongo One, where a 14,700-feet well was drilled off the Niger delta, where most of the on-shore wells are located.

If the new field is developed, it will be Nigeria's first off-shore oil site. The off-shore site may also help in easing the tensions caused by on-shore drilling. Nigeria hit international headlines ,after its government hanged Ken Saro-Wiwa and his eight comrades for having dared to voice their outrage over damage to Ogoniland on account of the oil explorations and ask for compensation. But, the Ogonis feel that no matter how Shell gets the oil, it will not benefit the poor of Nigeria.
