Sting in the tale
According to official figures, 3,000 people were afflicted with dengue and 50 succumbed to it. Most cases occurred in Delhi and Kerala. However, the disease also struck Maharashtra and Orissa. According to a WHO estimation, about 2,500 million people (2/5th of the world's population) face the risk of dengue. Globally, 60-100 million people suffer from dengue. The most severe form of this disease, which causes blood loss, can lead to a fatal shock-like state (Dengue Shock Syndrome) with or without associated haemorrhage. At present, no treatment of vaccine exists for this disease. It can only be prevented through vector control.
