Broken promises

the deadline for Indian automobile manufacturers to inform customers regarding the emissions warranty scheme ended on July 1, 2001, but manufacturers have done precious little to inform their customers about the scheme that they were supposed to offer for Euro II compliant vehicles. The scheme aims at revealing technical malfunctioning in the emission control systems and making the manufacturer responsible for the same.

To check out if the industry was indeed serious about implementing the scheme, Centre for Science and Environment, a Delhi-based non-governmental organisation, carried out a sample survey in the capital amongst the dealers of some of the leading automobile manufacturers, such as Hero Honda, Telco, TVS, Maruti and Hyundai.

The survey, which covered more than six dealers in the capital, revealed that none of the manufacturers had bothered to inform their customers about the warranty. Except for Hero Honda, which had published advertisements in some newspapers, most automakers have not even mentioned the
