MEXICO
The Mexican government has been asked to create a whale sanctuary to protect whales from being hunted by the Japanese. International environmental pressure group, Greenpeace, along with a few other organisations have urged Mexico to abide by its policy of protecting whales and create a sanctuary on its own shores.
According to Greenpeace, 125,000 Mexicans, in a joint statement sponsored by 125 domestic and international organisations, have appealed to the government to create a sanctuary, which can harbour the 39 of 80 whale species found in the Mexican waters. During their migration 45 per cent of the whales passing through the Mexican waters are hunted by the Japanese. A Mexican sanctuary will stop the Japanese hunters from capturing or injuring the whales. This will also help in maintaining a better environment for their reproduction and migration.
