LANDSLIDE AT PARBATI PROJECT: Twenty workers were trapped inside a tunnel at the Parbati hydroelectric power project in Himachal Pradesh following a landslide on August 7. The landslide, caused by a cloudburst and flash floods, blocked the entrance to the 1.5 kilometre (KM) long tunnel. Most of the workers had been rescued while efforts were on to extricate the remaining ones.

The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation is implementing the Parbati power project located in the Manikaran area, about 60 km from Kullu town.

Soon after the cloudburst, the flood waters rose forcing about 500 people living in the labour colony to take refuge in safer areas. The flash floods also washed away the approach road to the tunnel and a temporary road had to be constructed to carry out the rescue operations.
