Located on the Pune-Solapur highway, near village Bhadalwadi of district Pune, in Maharashtra, the mill started its operations in1997. Although it was rated, it was not ranked by grp as the company had not been operational during the entire period considered for ranking. Had the company been ranked it would have stood third. The company is a unit of the Indonesia-based Asia Pulp and Paper Company Limited and continues to import its requirement of bleached pulp. The unit generates relatively less pollution because it is not into pulp processing. According to D V Anand, Director of Sinar Mas, "the company is using the rating and the company's profile to educate the stakeholders on its environmental initiatives.' Or to say, wearing the rating it received by the grp as a badge on its chest. But it has not rested on its laurels. Since the release of the ratings, the company has reduced consumption of power, bringing it down from 870 kilowatt hour per tonne (kwh/t) of paper in 1998 to 790 kwh/t in 2000 for uncoated paper. For coated paper the consumption has gone down from 950 kwh/tin 1998 to 885 kwh/t in 2000 (see graph: P ower efficiency) . It is a result of the improved power factor
