Gunning for the greens
The forests of Honduras may soon lose their armed protectors. Authorities in the eastern part of the country have been directed by President Ricardo Maduro to hunt down and put behind bars a group of radical environmentalists guarding local woodland.
In an interview to La Prensa newspaper, three members of this group in Olancho province were purported to have declared that they would use violent means to put an end to illegal logging. But Jose Andres Tamayo, a priest and environmentalist, sees a conspiracy behind the press report. He has accused the loggers of stage-managing the interview to malign their opponents.
