Bike your way to work

IT'S a well-known fact that if people could be encouraged to get on their bikes, air pollution would decrease. Now a study published by the Cyclists Touring Club of Britain shows how the share of cycle use could be increased from the current four per cent to over 40 per cent of all non-walk journeys in the country. This has, in fact, been achieved in Delft city in the Netherlands. The study reveals that of all the car journeys undertaken, 61 p@r cent are for less than eight kms. If only people would take to cycling for short trips, air pollution would go down drastically. The study was partly financed by the Southampton City Council in the UK, which is now planning its urban transportation on the lines of 'People first, cars second'.
