AHMEDABAD: It's quite surprising that despite an existing ban on construction of residential colonies within 500 metres of the hazardous landfill sites, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has built houses for economically weaker sections in Vastral area, well within the banned limit. The ban was imposed by the central pollution control board. Locals here, including those living in private colonies have been complaining of stench that is emanating from the landfill site. "During monsoon, the strench gets worse . Its impossible to sit at home. We are worried as the landfill site may even effect out ground water," says Dhaval Parmar, a resident here.
Per Capita Daily Consumption In State Is 65.9 Grams Against National Average Of 47.9 Gandhinagar: An authoritative report, prepared by the National Sample Survey (NSS), has revealed that per capita consumption of fat among Gujaratis has been significantly increasing over the years. However, one witnesses a reverse trend in protein intake. Carried out between June 2009 and July 2010, and published this year all over the country, the report says that per capita per day fat intake in rural Gujarat was 47.3 gram in 1993-94, which reached 56.9g in 2009-10.

Researchers at Sardar Patel University (SPU) have designed, developed and implemented an automated dual axis solar tracker system, which works on sunflower motion for a solar power plant. And the country’s first indigenously designed solar tracker system also increases solar energy harnessing power of a solar power plant by 45 per cent. Interestingly, this indigenously developed solar power plant with the dual axial auto tracking system has been installed at the terrace of SPU’s Department of Physics where it generates up to 1.5 kilowatt per hour (KWh) of electrical power through 20 multi-crystalline solar panels of 75 watt generation capacity each.
Officials Blame Centre’s Lopsided Policy Gandhinagar: After experiencing a sharp rise in cotton production for two years in continuation, top Gujarat government officials estimate the possibility of an abrupt fall in 2012-13. “The fall may be 25 per cent or more”, a senior state government official told TOI. In fiscal 2011-12, cotton production in Gujarat was around 112 lakh bales, up from 98 lakh bales in the previous year. The rise of 14 per cent took place after cotton production experienced a whopping 33 per cent rise in 2010-11.
AHMEDABAD: Sale of gutka and pan masala is rampant in plastic sachets, even though the Supreme Court has levied a ban on them since March 1last year. Strings of pan masala and gutka sachets of numerous brands continue to hand in shops across the city, even as shopkeepers feign ignorance. "Who said there is a ban," says Ram Vaghasiya, who runs a pan shop in Shivranjani. There were tobacco products and pan masalas of more than 20 popular brands in his shop. Bhadresh, another shopkeeper in the area, said the supplies continue to be packaged in plastic sachets.

GANDHINAGAR: In a major boost for Gujarat's roads, the World Bank (WB) has agreed to a state government request to revise upwards its proposal to fund Gujarat State Highways Project (GSHP-II) from $350 million to $550 million. A WB note, made available here, says "improvement of about 1,100 km (650 km widening and 450 km strengthening) would be accommodated within this amount." The Gujarat government had earlier asked for the amount to be raised to $600 million. It applied for GSHP-II loan in 2009 after successfully executing the $550 million GSHP-I project between 2001 and 2007.
20 Wildlife Enthusiasts Have Taken Up Cudgels Against The Illegal Practice Ahmedabad: Wildlife lovers have joined hands to give the lion king of Gir some peace and quietness. With the help of NGOs working in Saurashtra, a group of wildlife enthusiasts has decided to take up cudgels against illegal lion shows organized in the revenue areas outside Gir Sanctuary. On Sunday, a group gathered in Ahmedabad to decide on the future course of action. In all, 20 wildlife lovers from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Amreli and other places attended the meeting, where they decided to launch a drive for the effective conservation of lions.
Gandhinagar:Gujarat’s powerful officialdom is on the run following mounting drinking water problem in Saurashtra and Kutch, especially their major towns and villages. Knowing well that it may become a major poll issue in the forthcoming assembly elections, scheduled late this year, chief minister Narendra Modi ordered senior babus of the state water resources and Narmada departments to immediately rush to the spots where water was being supplied to the two regions, and set things right.
AHMEDABAD: In order to make multi-utility spaces in urban areas viable and add to the revenue of civic agencies, Gandhinagar Urban Development Authority (Guda) plans to set up windmill-powered utility centers. This unique utility centre will act as a bus-stop, have space for advertisement display, a small cafeteria and sitting space. The centre will be powered by a small windmill and a solar panel and will draw little electricity from the main grid.
