Surat: Surat could well become the first city in India to make solar water heating in all buildings, residential and commercial, mandatory. Earlier, this year, the Union urban development ministry had made it mandatory that civic bodies of all 58 cities identified to be made “solar cities” change their construction bylaws to make solar energy compulsory for water heating systems. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will make the necessary changes in the bylaws of construction within a month. There are 10.2 lakh houses and nearly 65,000 commercial buildings in the city, which will have to switch over to solar water heating.

Experts who carried out a recent study of 19 major beaches along the state’s coastline have taken strong exception to complete mismanagement on the part of authorities towards the development of coastal tourism. The study is featured in a book which was released recently by the Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC).

The state government is planning to explore the feasibility of geothermal energy “We are meeting a delegation from Norwegian government to make a beginning of this untapped resource of energy next wee,” said T Harinarayana, director, Gujarat Energy Research and Management (GERMI).
AHMEDABAD: After a campaign against litterbugs and procurements to spruce up waste collection in the city, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) now has a roadmap for a zero waste Ahmedabad by 2031. The document, the only of its kind in the country was prepared with the help of United Nations Center for Regional Development (UNCRD), which identified a consultant and sponsored $20,000 for the report. The city was part of the 'ISWA World Congress 2011- Moving Towards Zero Waste for a Green Economy - Role of Local Authorities' which deliberated zero waste policies and strategies. The congress gave examples of US, UK and Philippines as countries that made significant progress in instituting a zero waste society.
Ahmedabad: The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) is practising what it teaches—making the most of available resources. The premier institute may soon become an energy independent business school by using solar energy and other energy-efficient products. IIM-A alumnus Akshat Khare and his partner Dhaval Shah, a Nirma University graduate, are helping the institute go the solar way by installing solar streetlights on the campus. The duo, through their start-up Nessa Illumination Technologies have also replaced IIM-A’s 150-watt sodium streetlights with 60-watt LED streetlights.
Ahmedabad: A comprehensive ban on production and sale of gutka will come into effect in Gujarat on Tuesday, as per the notification issued by the state government. Chief minister Narendra Modi, during his Independence Day address, had announced complete ban on gutka from September 11. However, there is a catch in the notification issued: sale of gutka will be prohibited, but one would be free to sell separately tobacco, beetle nut and lime separately.

Central Team Apprised Of Drought-Like Situation Despite Recent Rains Gandhinagar:The Gujarat government has asked the Government of India (GoI) to provide Rs 450 crore as “help” to fight vulnerable nutrition levels in 132 talukas, mainly belonging to Saurashtra, Kutch and North Gujarat, where the government believes a drought-like situation prevails, despite recent rains. The demand comes significantly close on the heels of Narendra Modi’s controversial statement where the chief minister said that middle class girls are so health conscious that they do not consume milk, hence suffer from poor nutrition levels.
AHMEDABAD: The state government may announce a major 'Nutrition Mission' in the first week of September, but it's worth mentioning that the mission itself is inspired from two similar nutrition missions launched in Maharashtra and Orissa. Maharashtra is on a nutrition mission mode since 2005. It was launched from Aurangabad district. Under this, a state-level steering committee is headed by the chief minister which interacts with an advisory committee and a committee under the chief secretary.
