Over half of tigers lost in 5 years: census
India has lost more than 50 per cent of its tiger population in the past five years with the numbers dwindling to 1,411 from 3,642 in 2001-02, according to the latest tiger census report. The "State of tiger, co-predators and prey in India' report, released here on Tuesday, said there had been an overall decrease in the tiger population except in Tamil Nadu where the numbers have gone up substantially from 60 in 2001-02 to 76.

Nuclear power sector: no private players for now
The private sector will not be allowed to enter the civilian nuclear power segment for at least another seven years, according to a top government official. The private sector's entry is conditional on a separate set of rules for the country strategic programme and other alterations in the Atomic Energy Act. "Work is in progress and is at varying stages. This means that the private sector will not get an opportunity till 2014,' said the official who did not wish to be quoted.

Financial constraints to rural electrification projects have been overcome and electricity can be provided to all by 2012, Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said on Monday. "There was a money constraint under the 10th Five-Year Plan.' But under the 11th Plan, Rs. 28,000 crore was granted to the power sector. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also promised more funds if necessary for rural electrification under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana. "As soon as the schemes are sanctioned, money will be released.'
