Farmers facing aftermath of drought
Farmers of the Matale district have to suffer the consequences of the severe drought that prevailed for the last two months. About 5,000 acres of paddy lands got destroyed resulting in 10,000 families facing a pathetic situation. Farmers complain that the water levels in the tanks have fallen and natural water cascading from hilly areas too to have dried up.

Two million fruit planting project gets under way
A campaign to plant more than two million fruit plants has been organized by the Trade, Consumer Affairs Minister Bandula Gunawardhana. The Re-awakening Project has taken steps to rehabilitate the Karavahu Drainage Scheme in Kalmunai to prevent frequent floods in the Kalmunai area during the rainy season. The World Bank has granted Rs.1,038 million to implement this project, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009, Project Director P.H. Sugathadasa said.
