  • Solid waste station planned at fertile land

    The City District Government has picked lush green fields and fertile land in the close vicinity of hundreds of houses near Saggian Bypass to establish municipal solid waste transfer station, but the Environment Department declared the project as unsuitable on number of grounds including the concerns shown by the residents of the area.

  • Three Pak NGOs win WB grants for AIDS projects

    Three civil society organisations from Pakistan won grants worth US $ 40,000 each from the World Bank's South Asia Development Marketplace (DM) to implement projects aimed at reducing stigma and discrimination associated with HIV and AIDS. "Overall, twenty-six proposals from across South Asia won grants from a US $ 1 million award pool," according to the bank statement issued here on Tuesday.

    Despite spending millions of rupees on projects of installation of water filtration plants, replacement of rusty water supply lines, increasing number of collection of water samples from 25 to 40 daily and purification of water through chlorination, the provision of clean water is still a distant dream for Lahorites.

  • PPA demands reforms in poultry sector

    To ensure revival of poultry sector and to meet the requirements of poultry meat and eggs, the Pakistan Poultry Association has urged the government to immediately undertake policy reforms in poultry sector. The PPA has warned that failure would cause a huge loss to the sector. Chairperson of PPA, Abdul Basit, while giving recommendations for budget 2008, said that the poultry industry bore huge loss of Rs 30.000 billion to Rs 35.000 billion during the 2006-07 due to bird flu rumours.

  • Green tea an armour against fatal diseases

    Green tea plays a protective role in human body against the fatal diseases, as it is found as rich in anti-oxidants, mainly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This was said by Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry, acting director international centre for chemical and biological sciences (ICCBS), Karachi University (KU) here on Thursday. While delivering a lecture at the ICCBS, he said the extensive consumption of the tea helps reducing fat cells (obesity) in human body, which is most common health problem of the country especially in the urban areas.

  • Proper disposal of solid waste stressed

    The participants of a seminar held here on Thursday called for properly disposing of the solid waste besides recycling the same for obtaining energy. The seminar, titled "Waste disposal and management" was jointly organised by Solid Waste Management Association of Pakistan (SWMAP) and Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak EPA). Dr Klaus Frike, head of department, waste management, and Dr Florian Kolsch, technical expert, Tube University, Germany, addressed the seminar.

  • Potable water shortage worsening in Capital

    Water shortage in the federal capital is worsening as mercury rises with sectors of the I-series hit at the most from the shortage. According to an official of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the Authority was receiving 6-8 hundreds complaints a day regarding the insufficient supply of water most of which were coming from the I-series of sectors of the city. The Authority was trying its best to coup with the situation but the 6-hours long power outage was the major obstacle in its way, said an official of the Water Supply Directorate of CDA.

  • Palla population declining fast

    The population of Palla fish in Sindh has declined to a significant extent. This phenomenon is attributed to the reduced flow of Indus River, resulting in the restricted upstream migration of Palla fish for breeding.
