Haldia/Calcutta : CPM state secretary Biman Bose met party leaders in Nandigram-scarred East Midnapore today and asked them to launch a campaign to convince farmers that no land would be acquired "without their consent'. The meeting came against the backdrop of the party central committee's directive to the state leadership to learn the "lesson' from its rural poll setback and redress the farmers' fear of losing their land while pursuing industrialisation.
KOLKATA : In a bid to reduce harmful effect of pollution on health, the Indian Medical Association has decided to conduct various mass awareness programmes in the city. Stressing on the need of such campaigns, Mrs Urmilla Khanna, president of Indian Medical Association said: "Pollution affects major human organs of the body and unless we are aware and take precautionary measures, the risk will keep on increasing in future.'
KOLKATA : Animal charmers, from the state's Bedia community, are facing a distressful situation after the state took away their animals in accordance with the Animal Protection Act. Approximately 800,000 people of the Bedia community in the state have been affected by the law enforcement measures and have had to stop their ancestral profession without being provided with another way to earn their livelihood.
KOLKATA : Poor crop productivity and low farm efficiency, owing to financial constraints and other reasons, is a major cause for low self-belief, and high prevalence of depression among the state's farmers. In a study conducted among farmers residing in Dumajoli village in Bhangar area of South 24-Parganas, it was found that more than 46 per cent of farmers lack self-efficacy, as they are not able to take up multiple cropping owing to financial constraints.
