  • Promises on power remain unfulfilled

    Though the state power minister, Mr Mrinal Banerjee today informed the House that by 2014, capacity of the generating stations will be enhanced by 3990 MW, his earlier promise of enhancing capacity is yet to be fulfilled. In 2006, the minister had stated in the house that the capacity of the generating stations under West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL) would be enhanced by 1570 MW in 2007. But, the capacity will be enhanced by 900 MW.

  • Nano to cost Rs 1 lakh despite plant cost rise

    KOLKATA, July 17: Tata Motors is expected to price its Nano at around one lakh despite cost escalation at their Singur plant but the one time tax you would pay during registration of your newly acquired Nano would go up by Rs 2,000 once the state Legislative Assembly gives its approval to the West Bengal Additional Tax and One Time Tax on Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill. The bill would be placed in the House tomorrow.

  • Fresh breach of embankment in Purbasthali

    bURDWAN : Further collapse of the Ganga riverbank has sparked off panic among the residents of Jahdanga and Tamaghata villages in Purbasthali area near Kalna. Twenty eight families so far have been shifted to safer places by the Kalna administration.

  • Buladi campaign comes a cropper

    TAMLUK : The litany of woes related to HIV/AIDS continues unabated in the rural fringes of West Bengal. Though, the state health department often claims that its AIDS awareness mascot, Buladi has been a success, but her campaign seems to have fallen flat even in the urban areas of Midnapore East district with the victims of the deadly disease being socially ostracised. This was proven recently, when a 27-year old woman and her family were ostracised by their neighbours at their village near Kolaghat after she tested HIV positive.

  • Embankment repair delayed

    State irrigation minister, Mr Subhas Naskar, today said that repair works of breached or damaged embankments are getting delayed in East and West Midnapore owing to non-availability of earth and lack of proper technology. Mr Naskar was making a statement on the recent floods in East and West Midnapore in the state Assembly.

  • KMDA to set up second flyover in Baghajatin

    The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) would be taking up the construction of a second flyover at Baghajatin for faster movement of traffic along the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The project is a part of the agency's move to add to the speed of vehicles particularly those bound for airport from south Kolkata and the southern suburbs. The project was signaled off by the state urban development minister Mr Asok Bhattacharya last week. The KMDA traffic and transportation section would supervise the work. The work is expected to be completed within 18 months.

  • Polio: Victim takes up eradication campaign

    In an effort to propagate the message that polio drops should be administered to all babies, members of Rotary International today took Mr Gautham Lewis, a victim of polio and an ambassador of the organisation and made a door-to-door polio eradication campaign in parts of Nonadanga, Metiabruz, and Topsia today.

  • Greener pastures sans billboards

    The city may breathe easier ~ and look prettier ~ if the Kolkata Municipal Corporation's decision to remove billboards from in front of parks and water-bodies comes into effect. The decision has been taken to keep the city's greenery free from "visual pollution". The civic body's advertisement department will not renew leases or allot new slots for billboards in front of parks or water-bodies.

  • Ramesh faces land-losers' ire

    ANDAL/MEJIA - Union minister of state for power, Mr Jayram Ramesh faced the land losers' ire twice in Andal, Burdwan and Mejia, Bankura while visiting the DVC power plants today. The land losers demanded immediate absorption against loss of their cultivable land which they had "sacrificed' for the DVC's plants. Mr Ramesh later met the their delegates in Mejia and assured help to them. n SNS
