Cyclone Aila, that hit parts of West Bengal last month, has damaged flowers and betel vines cultivated in six districts ~ Midnapore East, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, Birbhum, Nadia and Burdwan ~ and the loss is estimated at Rs 13 crore, according to a preliminary assessment done by the state horticulture department.
As no clear picture of changes in vegetation or micro flora and fauna in the Sunderbans is available, the state forest department is contemplating carrying out a thorough survey in the area soon. The department will send a proposal to the Centre for conducting the survey jointly with the Zoological Survey of India and Botanical Survey of India for a timespan of at least two years.

DURGAPUR, 14 JUNE: The West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) has asked state-owned Durgapur Projects Limited to prevent pollution caused by its coke-oven plant by 21 June. If the company fails to follow the order within the stipulated timeframe, the plant would be closed down.
