PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will meet senior officials of State Mines department on June 15, to review the announcements made in the state budget about the department and also on the roadmap for the crucial mining policy. Parrikar, who also holds mining portfolio, had announced a slew of measures to control illegal mining and also compensate losses incurred by common man and farmers as a fallout of rampant mining activity.
PANJIM: There are indications that the process of drafting the mining policy will begin after June 15 and be ready by the commencement of the new mining season. Several mines have begun shutting down their operations for the season as the monsoons have arrived in the state. The mining industry can now export only lumpy ore, while fines will have to be stacked in dry places.

PANJIM: National Green Tribunal Wednesday issued notices to six states, including Goa and Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), in response to the petition filed by five non-government organisations (NGOs) vis-à-vis Gadgil panel report on the Western Ghats. The NGOs in their petition filed before the tribunal had pleaded that the State government, pollution control authorities, environment impact assessment authorities and MoEF should not issue any consent for projects in Eco-Sensitive Zones – I and II, demarcated by the Gadgil panel.
PANJIM: Desperate efforts are on to plug the entry of sewerage into Panjim’s water supply line which is already suspected of being contaminated within an area of one kilometre in the heart of the city. The affected area is between Sky Lark apartments and Ding Dong Bar on 18th June Road. The PWD has been working round-the-clock to locate the exact point of contamination but has not yet located the same.

NEW DELHI: Goa’s Congress MP Shantaram Naik recently expressed concern over the mining activities in Sindhudurg district of the neighbouring Maharashtra polluting rivers in his state, particularly Tiracol and Colvale that originate in Maharashtra. Raising the issue through a special mention in the Rajya Sabha, he wanted the Centre to alert the appropriate authorities in Maharashtra to curb this menace by taking action under the Environment Protection Act, Water Pollution Act and the laws dealing with mining.
