Demanding the recovery of the national wealth, the Goenchea Xetkarancho Ekvott (GXE) has demanded criminal prosecution of the mine owners and operators involved in illegal mining. PANJIM: The Congress in Goa has expressed apprehensions that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s statement about the negative impact of mining on GDP, will prove costly for the mining industry. Party spokesperson Sudip Tamhankar told a press conference on Friday that Parrikar’s statement will prove to be a set back for mining dependents and ancillary units, who are currently facing financial crisis due to mining ban.
PANJIM: The Goa government has sought help from the Indian Council for Agricultural Research to help preserve the state germplasm as well as further research and develop it to get higher yield. Director of ICAR, Dr Narendra Singh too said that the local germplasm of the state especially when it came to locally grown varieties of vegetables, like brinjal etc, were some of the best in the country and needed to be preserved and that the ICAR was amenable to preserving it and taking it forward.
MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council’s action on the garbage management seems to be progressing at a snail’s pace. In fact, the civic body has shown no urgency in finalising an action plan on the door-to-door waste collection till date. While the door-to-door waste collection concept is yet to be tendered, the civic body has till date not yet decided how to go about capping of the existing dumping site at Sonsodo.
PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday said that the mining industry in the State should be treated with respect, rather than be looked at as a villain. “Today mining industry stands at the topmost level in the villain category, irrespective of the fact that industry has generated wealth for state, employment opportunities and other forms of work,” he said.
PANJIM: The Supreme Court’s (SC) Central Empowered Committee (CEC), which was unable to submit its report within the stipulated period to the apex court, has sought additional information from State government over iron ore production, export and sale within the country, for last five years from 2006-2011. The three members of CEC, who were down in Goa, last month had inspected around 12 mines in North and South Goa. The committee has now asked for additional information on environment clearance, mining plans, production and export along with the royalty figure, for the last five years. The committee has asked for information on sale of iron ore within the country, if any.
PANJIM: The Goa State Pollution Control Board will hear the defence of 48 mining firms, accused of extracting excess iron ore by Goa Foundation, between November 19 and November 23. The companies, during their hearing last month had challenged GSPCB jurisdiction to conduct hearing over excess production claiming that the environment clearances (ECs) are issued by Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF).
