PANJIM: Considering that land allocated for industrial development has been left unutilized or underutilized for years, the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) has resolved to direct around 150 such plot owners to either start the work or surrender the plots to the corporation, Goa State Industries Association (GSIA) said on Thursday. The decision was taken during the recent Goa Industrial Development Corporation board meeting. There are around 150 plots which were allotted during the previous regime.
VASCO: Vasco MLA and KTC Chairman Carlos Almeida has stated that the state government will get a grant of Rs 100 crore from Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to develop the Vasco city by the end of next year. “I will also see that Vasco will be free of handcarts, following the construction of the fish and the vegetable markets,” informed Almeida while addressing a press conference on Thursday, where he presented his progress card of the first year in the government.
PANJIM: “I am very clear. I am the mining minister. Nothing starts until I sign the file.” Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said Wednesday, while asserting his right to govern and re-start mining in the state. Parrikar said that mining in the state would not start until an expert committee which he proposed to appoint, to look into all aspects of mining activities, comes out with a plan on how to go about the activity.
PANJIM: Five out of the seven mining lease holders who were initially sent renewal notices have deposited Rs 129 crore in the bank, with one lease holder paying stamp duty. The State is hoping to mop up approximately Rs 252 crore, revenue in the form of stamp duty, from total 15 mining leases and a total of Rs 800 crore if all leases are renewed.
PANJIM: Tearing into the State government’s affidavit (reply), Goa Foundation in its rejoinder, has argued that if the original lessee cannot mine the ore from the mine, then it should be returned to the state instead of being allowed to be mined by a raising contractor. Iron ore resource is a public asset. In the act of mining, the said resource is depleted for profits which accrue to the private party to whom the asset is leased,” says the rejoinder, pointing out that the government is only the custodian of that asset, and therefore duty bound to ensure that the public asset is leased to private parties at the highest possible price.

PONDA: Residents of Keri-Ponda are on a chain hunger strike to oppose the deputy collector’s order granting permission to lift mined stones from a quarry at Amadi-Keri. Opposing the order, several villagers including women on Tuesday decided to block transportation of the mined stones. It may be recalled that the villagers have been opposing the stone quarry and crusher operations, on grounds that the project is illegal. The villagers claimed that the stone crusher was illegally operated in private property without the consent of the property owner and the stone quarry has caused irreparable damage to the environment.
