PANJIM: It could be the lack of mining trucks; or the roar of mining machinery; or even the change of guard in the Forest department, but at last the forest department has been forced to admit that Goa indeed is home to the majestic tiger. PANJIM: Around 2,000 cases have been booked for using or selling plastic bags below 40 microns thickness, since April 8, 2013. Also fines of Rs 2.48 lakh have been imposed on the violators, Environment Minister Alina Saldanha said in a written reply to Goa Assembly Wednesday. She said that government vide an April 8 order has implemented and enforced ‘The Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act 1996’ in the State, to ban sale and use of plastic bags which are below 40 microns thickness.
PANJIM: State government is in the process of framing a scheme for mining dependent people to help them make the transition from mining to agriculture, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the State Assembly on Tuesday. Parrikar also said that the State Mineral Policy, which is currently at the draft stage, will spell out government’s proposal to clear off mining rejects in agriculture properties to bring the wasteland into cultivable agriculture land.
