Karnataka bans iron ore exports
In a remarkable move, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa yesterday announced a ban on export of iron ore from Karnataka. The ban applies not only on exports out of the country but also out of the state. This means that Karnataka miners will not be able to circumvent the ban by moving their ore to ports like Mormugao in Goa or to Vishakapattnam in Andhra Pradesh to circumvent the ban.

Allowing SEZs would result in another Nandigram, fears govt
Goa government fears that allowing Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the State would result in another Nandigram like situation in the State. Advocate General Subodh Kantak on Thursday made the statement before the Bombay High Court at Goa while responding to the petitions filed by SEZ promoters and Public Interest Litigations (PIL) filed by the activists.

House passes Panchayati Raj Amendment Bill
The Goa Assembly on Thursday passed Goa Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2009 after re-considerations by the members with revision powers given to district courts. The Amendment Bill was stalled twice and was referred to the select committee. The Bill went through this time as appropriate amendments were effected.

Katarwada locals demand enquiry in pollution caused by chemical factory
Residents of Katarwada, Bicholim Industrial Estate and surrounding areas have demanded enquiry in the pollution caused in the area by a chemical factory. The residents have once again complained of pollution caused by a chemical factory in the area, as earlier, wells were polluted, but in the recent case reported in the area, a cow was seriously burnt due to chemical contact.
