Metro rail projects are currently under implementation in seven cities Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said metro rail projects would start in 19 cities, which have a population of more than 2 million. Addressing the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Kochi Metro project here, Singh said, “We have taken a decision to support preparation of detailed project reports for metro rail projects in all the 19 cities with population of more than 2 million. DPRs have already been prepared for 12 cities.” The first phase links Aluva to Petta.
Kerala Sanitation Mission to provide technical support In a boost to the anti-litter campaign of the City Corporation, over 1,200 households coming under 12 residents’ associations in and around West Hill here have drawn up a plan to set up their own biodegradable-waste-treatment units. The Kerala Sanitation Mission will team up with the members of these residents’ associations and extend technical support to them.
Faced with the challenge of finding a solution to the worsening waste management crisis across the State, the State government has initiated steps to establish integrated municipal solid waste treatment plants in five more urban local bodies in the State. Suchitwa Mission, the government’s nodal agency for implementation of public sanitation and waste treatment schemes in the State, had earlier invited tenders to set up large scale waste treatment plants in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.
The government plans to seek World Bank funding for development of 8570 km of major district roads to international standards, Minister for Public Works V. K. Ebrahim Kunju told the Assembly on Monday. Replying to the debate on the demand for grants for Public Works, the Minister said that a study would be conducted for submission of the proposal to the Bank in six months. The Bank had agreed to consider the proposal.
The proposed monorail project in Kozhikode received a shot in the arm on Tuesday with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) submitting the detailed project report to the State government and expressing willingness to take it up from September.
