KOTTAYAM: The Rubber Board has decided to grant financial assistance to set up demonstration plots for soil protection and water harvesting in small holdings. According to a release, the scheme intends to set up such demonstration plots in a total area of 1,000 hectares, spread over traditional and non-traditional rubber areas other than Northeast during 2010-11.

A study carried out by the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) has reported heavy metal pollution in Vembanad Lake and the rivers emptying into it. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Around 14.52 percent of the total area in the state is prone to floods. Alappuzha district has been identified as the most flood-prone district and Idukki is the least flood-prone area.
The Rubber Board has invited applications from rubber growers for assistance in replanting and new planting under the Rubber Plantation Development Scheme. Applications in the prescribed form in duplicate together with two copies of correct survey plan of the land should reach the respective regional offices of the Board.
KOCHI: The Parliamentary sub committee on Water Resources headed by Rajapathy Sambasiva Rao has found that the 130 year-old Mullaperiyar Dam is posing a threat to the lives of around 30 lakh people living in Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts.
