About two lakh people in Palakkad’s Chittur taluk are facing acute drinking water shortage even as a high-level central team visited the drought-affected areas there on Tuesday. Officials of the Kerala Water Resources Department said the shortage would be severe if Tamil Nadu did not release water from Parambikulam. Drought has already destroyed paddy cultivation to the tune of Rs 80 crore in the district. Chittur is the worst affected.
At a time when the district is reeling under severe water crisis, the prime water source of over 30 families of a colony in Mundakayam has been contaminated by suspected poisoning by unidentified anti-social elements. The confluence of two canals, Perithode and Manjalaruvy thode, has remained the sole drinking water supply source of Thonippara Colony for over 15 years. The water source has also been beneficial for over 200 families of Kannimala, the 15th ward of the Mundakayam grama panchayat, during the peak of summer.

Council demands closure of dumping yard The conflict between Kottayam municipal authorities and the people of Vadavathur over the dumping of municipal waste at the yard there appears to be resurfacing. The action council that was spearheading the protests against dumping of waste at the yard decided on Sunday to re-launch their agitation. The movement had been lying dormant for a while on account of court strictures. However, intense struggle would be re-launched with a declaration on October 2, according to Paulson Peter, convener of the action council.
The Government Model Residential School, Peerumade, was closed on Monday after over 60 students were admitted to various hospitals since Sunday, due to alleged food poisoning. The condition of none of the students was serious, reports reaching here said. The authorities at the Peerumade taluk hospital said that students started to arrive at the hospital with complaints of vomiting, head ache and fever symptoms by evening on Sunday. When the number of casualties increased by Monday, the hospital authorities referred those having severe symptoms to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital.
