Bangalore The Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology (MAIT) has urged the Union ministry of environment & forests to address the hindrances faced in the successful implementation of e-waste management rules calling for simplification of the existing regulations. Some of the issues which have been raised by MAIT relate to multiple reporting authorities. The rules mention obtaining an authorisation from the concerned State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) or PCC (Pollution Control Committee), however, the producers are now forced to take authorisation from multiple states, thus, adding to duplicity in data compilation, MAIT said on Monday. For the companies and SPCBs, this only adds to the administrative burden without adding any value addition.
The ban on the sale of plastic tri-colours by the Palike seems to have no takers, as flag sellers were seen selling them at most traffic junctions in the City. The Palike’s order of July 8, 2012, banning sale and display of plastic flags, has been violated by both the hawkers and the public. When BBMP Commissioner M K Shankarlinge Gowda was apprised of the situation, he said all plastic flags on sale would be seized.
The entire city turned a virtual garbage dumpyard on Wednesday, after 16,000 BBMP pourakarmikas struck work, refusing to pick up nearly 3,000 tonnes of garbage. Bangaloreans might have to bear the stench of uncleared garbage for a few more days, as the sanitation workers are on an “indefinite” strike against what they alleged were “personal vendetta” and “harassment” by the Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF).
BWSSB decides to waive road cutting charges for the first two months The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will begin sanctioning new water supply connections to the residents of the erstwhile city municipal council and town municipal council areas of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike by September-end. Bangalore Water Supply Minister S Suresh Kumar told reporters here on Tuesday that an estimated two lakh new connections will be sanctioned under the Cauvery water IV stage, II phase project, which will be commissioned this month end. The project will bring an additional 500 million litre per day (MLD) of Cauvery water to the City.

The report card of the State Health Department on water samples shows that water could be substandard, even if it is stored in a sealed container. Of the eight packaged drinking water samples analysed by the Public Health Institute of the department of Health and Family Welfare in June, seven (87.5 per cent) were found to be substandard and thus did not meet the prescribed specification of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Axed trees resurface in the record books BBMP’s tree officers are under a cloud following allegations that they siphoned off crores of rupees on the pretext of paying for contract labour to fell trees which had been felled long ago. An RTI query by NGO Civic Bangalore revealed that in 2007, the Palike felled 255 trees on Bellary Road near CBI Junction, Golf Club, near High Grounds police station, Cunningham Road, Windsor Manor, Cauvery Theatre and Balabrooie. Similarly, 199 trees were axed on Hosur-Sarjapur Road and 159 trees in the central zone.
Not applicable to towns and cities; Opposition criticises Bill in Council The Karnataka Land Revenue (Amendment) Bill, 2012, to regularise unauthorised houses built on government land in places other than towns and cities, was approved in both Houses of the legislature on Thursday. While members across parties welcomed the bill in the Assembly, it drew flak from the Opposition in the Council. Members in the Assembly demanded that the government should bring unauthorised houses in urban areas in the ambit of the Bill, so that the urban poor can also benefit. The government turned down the demand, but promised a separate bill for urban areas.

Plans state-of-the-art lab costing Rs 50 lakh to test suspected cases The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will reach out to 20 lakh people in the next 10 days as part of its dengue awareness drive. It will also set up a laboratory on the lines of National Institute of Virology at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. Three ‘rapid test/cross test’ units will also be set up in the City. Replying to allegations by the Opposition parties that the Palike had failed to contain the spread of dengue, at the monthly Council meeting on Tuesday, BBMP Commissioner M K Shankarlinge Gowda admitted to the lapse and said he did not expect the disease to spread so fast.
