The High Court of Karnataka on Monday asked the residents of Bangalore to hold corporators and ward committee members responsible for uncleared garbage in their respective wards. During the hearing of a batch of public interest litigations on the garbage crisis in the City, the Division Bench comprising Justices N Kumar and B V Nagarathna said ward committees headed by corporators have a greater role in addressing garbage problem.
The National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) will be launched in Bangalore on a pilot basis in the coming months. PUNE: The much-delayed Pune metro rail project got a funding of Rs 10.01 crore in the Union Budget on Thursday. The Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations, that have proposed the project in association with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, have already made provisions in their respective budgets for the year 2013-14. The budgetary head, 'Pune Metro', figures in the list of projects of the urban development department for the first time this year in budget. The total funding of Rs 10.01 crore has been bifurcated into three components.

Thanks to its adoption of solar energy to power its traffic signals, the City traffic police have hit paydirt saving a whopping Rs 1.73 crore in energy bill. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M A Saleem, said: “We paid a total of Rs 19.58 lakh to Bescom in 2012. The solar-powered traffic signals, installed since 2001, have helped us a lot. We have solar-powered traffic signals at all busy junctions in City.” “Today we have around 251 timers as energy consumed by solar-powered traffic signals has reduced drastically. There are over 343 regular signals and 42 pedestrian control signals, all of them with LED lights.”
After the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP’s) ‘Wake Up, Clean Up Bengaluru’ campaign held earlier this month, many commercial and residential associations have come forward with commitments to clear garbage by having their own solid waste management (SWM) and scientific disposal systems. Industrial layouts, apartment complexes, commercial establishments and hospitals are among bulk generators who have made such commitments. As many as 134 companies, big and small, 2,500 to 3,000 industries in various layouts and about 40 per cent of the apartments in the City have committed themselves to dispose their waste on their own over the next three months, a senior BBMP official said.

Going by industry prediction, the residential sector — both independent houses and residential apartments — are set to outnumber commercial buildings by 2030 in India.
