Cutting hills: Why and why not

India and Bangladesh discuss water issue
NEW DELHI: India and Bangladesh made some progress during the Foreign Secretary-level talks here on Thursday on the water issue that has often vitiated public opinion on both sides of the border. Even the scientific documents, like the master plan of the Bharalu river prepared by the Brahmaputra Board, have not been given a damn by the Government while addressing these problems, they allege.

Mathur concerned over Arunachal mega dams
Assam Governor Shiv Charan Mathur who assumed charge today expressed reservations over the proposed mega hydro-power projects in Arunachal Pradesh, saying that dam-induced damages like flood and adverse environmental impacts needed to be assessed properly. "I am aware of Assam's concerns over the dams and I feel there is no need to construct mega dams. Small hydel projects on the tributaries of the Brahmaputra and Barak should serve our purpose,' he said while addressing his first press conference.

Massive erosion, floods posing threat to KNP
The flood and erosion by the Brahmaputra has posed a major threat to the northern part of the Kaziranga National Park (KNP). About 40 sq km of the 430 sq km area of the Park has been affected. According to satellite survey, about 37.40 sq km have been gobbled up by the mighty river. The Arimona forest beat office was set up in 1951 in Kohora range. The office conducts the patrolling of the forest personnel. A luxurious guest house was also constructed near the beat office.
