Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam, which had shown signs of improvement last week, took a turn for the worse on Wednesday following heavy rainfall in some parts of the state in the past 48 hours. Official sources said over 75 villages in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts have been inundated afresh due to flash floods since Tuesday. Over 70,000 people have been affected afresh by the rising water levels in the two districts, where dykes in Brahmaputra and Jiadhol rivers have broken down at some places.
Guwahati: Over 150 villages have been completely lost to erosion and nearly 200 more partially eroded, rendering over 75,000 people homeless, in Assam by floods and erosion in the last ten years. Informing this in reply to separate questions in the state Assembly on Tuesday. The Assam government on Tuesday agreed to move a resolution in the state assembly to declare the flood and erosion problem afflicting the state as a national calamity.
GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam continued to remain grim with four more deaths in different areas of the State, taking the toll to 35 even as the water levels in many rivers have started receding. About 10.80 lakh people in the State’s 2,084 villages have been affected in the current floods, and 173 relief camps have been set up. Over 82,000 people have been affected by the current wave of floods in Majuli. The National Disaster Response Force (NDFR) has been continuing rescue and relief operations in the river island. Over one lakh people in the river island have taken shelter on embankments.
Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation deteriorated on Sunday as incessant rains breached embankments inundating several villages, vast tracts of cropland and affecting nearly two lakh people. The current deluge has so far claimed eight lives in the state and nearly two lakh people have been affected, official sources said. Altogether 14 districts have been affected by the floods. The districts are Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Barpeta, Kamrup (Rural), Baksa, Sonitpur, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Nagaon, Morigaon and Dhubri.
Guwahati: A Division Bench of Gauhati High Court comprising Chief Justice A K Goel and Justice N K Singh has held that the protocol signed between India and Bangladesh on exchange of land can’t be implemented without amending the Constitution and enactment of law. The land protocol aims at exchange of adversely possessed land by both the countries in Assam and West Bengal border areas. The High Court order came in response to a PIL filed by Sujata Changkakoti and three other advocates.
