JAMMU: A day after the J&K government decided to scrap the controversial land transfer to the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) which sparked off protests across the valley, the saffron brigade forced a complete shutdown in Jammu on Monday. The bandh call was given by BJP and its allies against what they called "the politicization and surrender of the state government to separatist forces on the issue of allotment of land to SASB". Shops, schools and colleges were closed while roads were deserted. There was thin attendance in government and private offices.
SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir cabinet is likely to revoke the order to transfer land to the Amarnath shrine board besides allocating key portfolios that fell vacant after resignations by PDP ministers. A meeting of the cabinet under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is scheduled for Tuesday during which a discussion will be held on the order to hand over 39.88 hectares of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) and a decision taken on it, official sources said here.
NEW DELHI: As the standoff over the Indo-US nuclear deal between the Left parties and the government continued, RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Tuesday met Congress President Sonia Gandhi here. Prasad refused to talk to journalists waiting outside Gandhi's residence after the short meeting. The meeting came in the backdrop of reports that the Railway Minister was in touch with the Samajwadi Party for backing the UPA in case the Left parties withdrew support to the government in the event of forward movement on the nuclear deal.
A day after withdrawing support to the Congress in J-K, the PDP on Sunday said the reported decision of the state Government to take charge of the logistics arrangements of the Amarnath yatra was only a half-way measure which would not help in resolving the grave situation that had engulfed the state. The statement came after a party meeting presided over by its president Mehbooba Mufti here.
