India’s energy consumption beats GDP growth due to subsidies
India’s energy consumption has risen at a compounded annual growth rate of 5.96% in the last three decades even while GDP has grown by 5.7%, pointing to need for fuel price reforms and securing more of the hydrocarbon from domestic sources. According to the Energy Statistics report for 2013 prepared by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI), the per capita energy consumption has grown by five times to 6205.25 kWh at the end of 2011-12 from 1,204.39 kWh in 1970-71, a CAGR growth of 3.98%. The per capita energy consumption was up by 7.2% during 2011-12.

Stalled projects a tall order for CCI
The newly-formed Cabinet Commitment on Investment (CCI), floated by the government to fast-track big-ticket projects, has its task cut out. Among the 198 mega central sector projects costing over R1,000 crore under implementation, nearly half, or 81, are running behind schedule. These include seven projects being executed by the railways that are delayed by more than a decade, according to the ministry of statistics and programme implementation’s latest project status estimate (updated till the end of July).

Jena alleges Rs 4 lakh cr loss to state in mining scam
The Odisha treasury could have benefited to the tune of Rs 4 lakh crore in the form of non-tax receipts since 2003-04 had the state government cancelled the leases of mines running on deemed extension basis and handed those properties to Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), said Union minister for statistics and programme implementation and chemicals and fertilisers, Srikant Kumar Jena, here on Tuesday. “The leases of many mines are not being renewed for various irregularities and allowed to run on deemed extension basis. The state government has the right to cancel the leases of these mines under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act,” he claimed.

Rural Indians survive on 43 rupees a day: Survey
The average household in rural India spends just 43 rupees (77 US cents) per head a day, with their urban equivalents consuming almost double, according to new government data. The latest study from the National Sample Survey Office, a huge undertaking every two years, shows that average monthly per capita expenditure for a rural household was just 1,281 rupees compared with 2,401 rupees in cities.

NSSO to survey indebtedness of farmers in 70th round
Information on the situation of farmers in the country will be collected as part of the 70th round of the National Sample Survey, to be conducted by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) from January 2013. “The 70th round of National Sample Survey , starting from January 2013 that will continue for the entire year will study the situation of farmers, their indebtedness and landholding positions,” said TCA Anant, Chief Statistician of India and Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation at the inaugural ceremony of three day regional training camp (June 18-20) on NSS 69th round organized here.
