Incidence of wildlife poaching is on the rise in the southern States, said Ravi P. Singh, Secretary-General of World Wide Fund for Nature – India (WWF-I). Mr. Singh who was here recently told The Hindu that poaching of leopards in the southern States has increased. Since 2000, the Traffic, a wing of the WWF-I, had gathered data on seizure of leopard skins, which showed an alarming increase.
On the eve of World Environment Day, Canada High Commission today organised a workshop with a view to encouraging children to think of ways to save the state bird, house sparrow which is slowly diminishing in numbers. The workshop which the commission jointly oragnised with the ECO Roots, an NGO, saw a participation of more than 100 children between the age of eight and 12 years from various schools based in Delhi and the NCR and from NGOs such as Asha Society and Children of the World.
Increasing concretization and loss of greenery have led to a dwindling of the city's butterfly population. But now, a group of schoolchildren, as part of a community initiative, is working to bring the colourful insects back to town. The plan is to place nectar-rich plants like lantanas, which attract butterflies, in public parks and gardens. This is aimed at providing a conducive environment for different species of butterflies to thrive, said Dr Puja Sukhija, executive director of the NGO Organisation of Aware Saviours in Society (OASIS), which is involving schoolchildren in the 'Bring Back Butterflies' project.
The Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) has proposed setting up a greenhouse gas observatory at Munnar as part of developing an integrated climate change database and information system in the State. The initiative is part of the estimate Rs. 80-crore scientific study to map the impact of climate change on agriculture, fisheries, industries, transport, tourism, bio-diversity and forestry sectors.
