Thrissur: A panel constituted to work on demarcating ecologically-sensitive zones around national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in the state on Monday visited the Silent Valley National Park in Palakkad and held deliberations with the public. The panel members, comprising MLAs T N Prathapan, N Shamsudeen and state wildlife board officials, decided to recommend to the Union ministry of environment and forests to declare the entire 148-sq km buffer zone around the park as an ecologically-sensitive zone.

In a letter to the Chief Wildlife Wardens of all the States, Vivek Saxena, Deputy Inspector General, Wildlife, Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has said the progress in declaring eco-sensitive zones was far from satisfactory despite the Ministry issuing guidelines in February 2011 itself.
PANJIM: The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests in its affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, stated it has no objection to the present petition being heard on merit, sticking to its earlier stand that in case a mining project is located within 10 kms from a wildlife sanctuary or national park, environmental clearance should be accorded subject to obtaining clearance from the standing committee of the National Board of Wildlife. This clearance puts the onus on the mine owner to submit an application and obtain wildlife clearance under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1973 “…as the environment clearance process is a parallel exercise and independent of any other statutory clearances.”
The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) on Monday told states any commercial activity within 10 km of 650 national parks and wildlife sanctuaries would be discontinued if they failed to notify ecologically sensitive areas by next month. Environment secretary V Rajagopalan, in a letter to state chief secretaries, has sought proposals for declaring eco-sensitive zones latest by February 15, 2013, as a last opportunity to submit their report. “In case the states and union territories fail to submit the proposals, the activities prohibited as per the 2011 guidelines would stand implemented within 10 km of national parks and sanctuaries,” the letter quoted Rajagopalan as saying.
