Reducing infant mortality rate still a tough task for state government
JAIPUR: One out of four women in Rajasthan delivers her child at home, which is a major cause of maternal deaths. The state government has a tough job on its hands to reduce the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) from 318 per lakh live births to 150 and infant mortality rate (IMR) from 55 per 1000 live births to 25 per 1000 births by 2015. Around 23% pregnant women continue to deliver at home even though the Central and state governments have been spending crores every year to promote institutional deliveries under various schemes including the state flagship scheme- Janani Shishu Suraksha Yojana (JSSY).

Jaipur municipal corporation fails in waste management: Report
JAIPUR: The first spell of monsoon shower brought a huge relief from the blistering summer heat, but along with it came a sordid tale of woes, particularly water-logging and garbage strewn all over. Most places saw water-logging on the roads with garbage meant to be picked up, clogging the drains as the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) disposal system in the city is in a sorry state. Trash thrown outside the bins just got washed away in the streets. It seems 51 health inspectors, 208 jemadars, 6,330 street sweepers and 1,392 temporary sweepers on the rolls of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) have failed on their job.

The progress in child mortality rate, maternal health, gender equality and empowerment of woman and marginalized communities is completely off track. The statistics noted in the report for Rajasthan are painting a grim picture of the state’s development.

SC allows preservation, restoration of Jal Mahal lake to pvt firm
JAIPUR: The Supreme Court on Friday allowed preservation and restoration work of Jaipur's Man Sagar Lake by the private firm to which the 17th century monument Jal Mahal has been leased out. In the last hearing of the matter on May 25, the court had allowed the firm to carry out preservation and restoration work of just the Jal Mahal that stands in the lake. During hearing of the litigation disputing the monument's lease agreements on Friday, a bench comprising Justices Deepak Verma and Gyan Sudha Mishra observed that the lake was part of the monument.

Poachers thrash forest guard in Ranthambore, kill deer
JAIPUR: At least 10 poachers, armed with guns and knifes, thrashed a forest guard in Indala area in Ranthambore National Park on Tuesday night after he tried to nab them. The poachers escaped after killing a spotted deer. According to sources, a guard, Hanuman, who was on duty in the park at night, heard some noises nearby. Suddenly he saw a few persons armed with guns and knifes. "No sooner he stepped forward, the poachers attacked him. At this the guard raised an alarm and soon his colleagues reached for help. But even they were attacked by the poachers who then escaped," said an official.

More parking lots to be developed in Jaipur
JAIPUR: To curb parking menace in the city, the civic bodies have geared up to develop parking lots in the city. Acting on the directions of the empowered committee that was constituted to develop Pink City as a world-class city, the civic bodies have identified areas to develop in the city. On Tuesday, in a meeting chaired by Kuldeep Ranka the Jaipur development commissioner (JMC), directions were given to the officials to issue work orders for developing parking near Jal Mahal and Gandhi Nagar station areas.

Pollution level 4 times high in Walled City’
Jaipur: The state government on Monday filed a detailed report on the shops and sculpture manufacturers working in Khajanewalon Ka Rasta in the old Walled City and stated that no manufacturing work will be allowed as it has resulted in air and noise pollution. The government also clearly stated before the court that no manufacturing unit will be allowed in the Walled City including Khajanewalon Ka Rasta, Bhindon Ka Rata and the adjoinging old places known as 'chhokri murtikar'.

Court comes down heavily on polluting crushers
JAIPUR: A division bench of high court has issued notice on a PIL over the non-deployment of water sprinkler system and other pollution control measures by the large number of stone crushers of Kaladera industrial area of RIICO at Jaipur. The notices were issued on a PIL filed by one Lakhan singh alleging that a large number of stone crushers are operating in the Kaladera industrial area of RIICO and they are not using any safety measures as well as pollution control steps to check pollution caused by small sand particles after extraction from these stone mines.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to use rooftop solar power
AHMEDABAD: Three public buildings in the city will use solar power to meet their daily energy needs by the end of the year. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will have its south zone office in Maninagar, Memco sports complex and west zone office in Usmanpura using rooftop solar power. The purpose is to show Amdavadis that with high electricity prices, solar systems ensure handsome savings in the long run. The pay off period - time to recover investment in the power unit — can be less than two years, claim AMC officials.
