The government plans to seek World Bank funding for development of 8570 km of major district roads to international standards, Minister for Public Works V. K. Ebrahim Kunju told the Assembly on Monday. Replying to the debate on the demand for grants for Public Works, the Minister said that a study would be conducted for submission of the proposal to the Bank in six months. The Bank had agreed to consider the proposal.

The Suchitwa Mission, which is coordinating the activities of solid waste management in the State, is planning to launch a programme for compressing waste material into bales and packing it so as to process it later. The initiative is being undertaken in the wake of the delay in executing its earlier plan to set up waste management units in major cities. The work on preparing bales and packing the solid waste will be done by competent agencies, to be selected through an official selection process. The project is to be launched at Thiruvanathapuram before being extended to other cities.
The Endosulfan Satyagraha Samiti will organise a relay hunger strike from June 25 as part of intensifying its agitation against delay in providing relief to victims. The recent decision of the State government to disburse relief in tune with the recommendations of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) lacked clarity, the samiti said in a statement issued here on Sunday.“We have decided to intensify the two-month-old strike by resorting to a relay hunger strike in protest against the undue delay in implementing the comprehensive rehabilitation package,” samiti convener Ambalathara Kunhi Krishnan said

Babu has said that projects worth Rs. 650 crore will be implemented this year for the development of fisheries sector. The talks held here on Wednesday between the Thrissur Corporation and the Lalur Malineekarana Viruddha Samara Samithi to solve garbage issue in the city failed to yield any result. The garbage disposal from the city had been hit since last January after residents of Lalur, the garbage disposal site of Thrissur Corporation, blocked dumping of waste following a major fire at the dumping yard. Mayor I.P. Paul urged the Samara Samithi leaders to cooperate with the civic body to dispose of the garbage from the city.
