The Canolly canal and the Kallayi river will be de-silted soon with assistance from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard), District Collector K.V. Mohan Kumar said here on Tuesday. Approval of the Shipping and Navigation Department had been obtained for deepening the Canolly canal at a cost of Rs.4.6 crore. The project envisaged deepening the 11-km stretch of the canal from Elathur to Kallai.

The Health Department is preparing to embark on a major exercise to prepare a databank or the statistics regarding hotels and other food businesses in the State, as part of implementing the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 effectively. Not only would the statistics on hotels and food establishments collected, each of the establishments would be graded into various categories. The Food Safety wing and the Health Department will also come out with detailed and separate guidelines on maintaining food safety and standards for food establishments in rural and urban areas.
Kerala Sanitation Mission to provide technical support In a boost to the anti-litter campaign of the City Corporation, over 1,200 households coming under 12 residents’ associations in and around West Hill here have drawn up a plan to set up their own biodegradable-waste-treatment units. The Kerala Sanitation Mission will team up with the members of these residents’ associations and extend technical support to them.
Rs.1,000 to be given for paddy cultivation in a hectare High-tech farming will be introduced in all panchayats in the district, Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan has said. He was addressing a meeting here on Monday to review activities in the district’s agriculture and dairy sectors. “Precision and greenhouse farming will be introduced in panchayats. In the first phase of the project, demonstration units will be set up in the panchayats,” he said.
District Judge K. P. Jyothindranath who inspected Lalur, the Thrissur Corporation’s waste disposal site, recently has submitted his report to the High Court. He inspected Lalur under a directive of the High Court that the district judge should review waste treatment in the site every six months. The report suggested that decentralised waste treatment plants should be set up at the earliest. “The processing units for plastic materials and bio-degradable wastes should be established in a large scale. Waste management systems for residents, apartments, hotels, markets and educational institutions should be promoted,” the report said.
The pipe composting method of treating waste set up by students of Chettikulangara High School in the district has caught the attention of chairpersons of three municipalities, who are now on the path to implementing it in their areas. Ambili Suresh, chairperson of the Kayamkulam municipality who visited the school to see the model for herself, said that the municipality had decided to implement it in houses in the area. “Since many of the houses are located in four cents or even less, biogas plants cannot be set up. Hence, models such as pipe composting are beneficial to them. We will submit a proposal to the District Suchitwa Mission soon in this regard,” she said.
Discussions on to set up pyrolysis plant The Corporation, still in the dark about how to dispose of the organic waste generated in the city with the Vilappilsala plant remaining closed, has some hope on the plastic waste disposal front. The civic body has arrived at an understanding with the Bangalore-based Green Transit Renewable Energies, which has come forward with an offer to collect and process plastic waste from the city.
