Mumbai: Alphonso mangoes will not hit the markets on time next season; blame it on Cyclone Phyan. And when it does, the quantity may not be enough for the connoisseurs of the luscious fruit. As the flowering of the mangoes has been destroyed by the cyclone in the Konkan area where it is mostly grown, the rates are destined to soar.
Cyclone Aila has altered their calculations. Hit by crop failure due to increased salinity caused by sea water surge, the farmers of the Sunderbans were pinning hope on the low-yield but salt-resistant paddy varieties that their forefathers cultivated.
Pune Crops worth Rs 207 crore were damaged because of cyclone Phyan that struck Pune last week, according to preliminary figures released by the district administration. About 1.45 lakh farmers, and cultivable land of nearly 75, 363 hectares have been affected. The figures will be put before the state government for compensation to be disbursed to the farmers.

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena on Monday blamed the state government for the damage caused to lives and property in the Konkan after Cyclone Phyan hit the coastal areas last week. "It was the duty of the government to inform fishermen about the cyclone earlier," Subhash Desai, leader of the Sena in the assembly, said. He was speaking after a visit to the cyclone-affected areas.
