Ongole, May 31: Cyclone Laila victims staged protests on Mo-nday at Tangutur and Nagulappadu mandals, alleging anomalies in distribution of cyclone compensation. At B. Nidamanuru village of Nagulappadu mandal, protesters squatted on the Chirala-Ongole road, due to which vehicular traffic was stalled for several hours.

Ananya Dutta GOSABA (SUNDERBANS): In the year that has gone by since cyclone Aila devastated the Sunderbans, livelihood opportunities have dried up for the inhabitants of the region. The situation has arisen from a failed crops, dwindling fish catches and absence of enterprise and resulted in large scale emigration from the islands.
Government has allocated Tk one crore for implementation of Safe Water Supply Programme (SWSP) in the Aila affected areas of Khulna and Satkhira districts. The programme will continue for 75 days from the day of receiving the fund, said a source at Khulna office of public health engineering department (PHED). KOLKATA: Villages in the Aila-affected region of the Sunderbans witnessed a complete shut-down on Tuesday, the first anniversary of the cyclone, as a result of a twelve-hour strike called by the Left Front in protest against the apathy of the Central government to the plight of the inhabitants of the islands.
Hyderabad, May 25: Despite rains due to the cyclone Laila, reservoirs in the Telangana region, including Hyderabad, failed to get adequate inflows. Osmansagar, Himayatsagar, Manjira, Singur and Nagarjunasagar, which feed Greater Hyderabad with 332 Million Gallons of Water per day (MGD), hardly received any inflows.
Rajahmundy, May 25: Laila cyclone brought relief to East Godavari in the form of developing water sources, both surface and ground water. Studies reveal that the district, which was otherwise reeling under severe water shortage, benefited from the rains due to the cyclone immensely.
