A cyclonic storm codenamed 'Bijli' formed over the west-central and adjoining east-central Bay and moved slightly northwards on Thursday evening, packing a wind speed of up to 80 kilometers per hour. A latest special bulletin of the Met Office said it was centered about 735 km southwest of Chittagong Port, 685 km southwest of Cox's Bazar Port and 600 km south/southwest of Mongla Port at 6pm.

Visakhapatnam: The deep depression over west central Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards and intensified into a cyclonic storm, Bijli, and lay over west central Bay of Bengal at 5.30 pm, about 470 km south east of Visakhapatnam, reports our correspondent.

At least 50 houses were partially damaged due to a twister that blew across Ihalapuliyankulam at Karuwalagaswewa in the Puttalam District last night. Residents of the area said the twister blew across their village for about seven minutes with a loud sound. Most of the houses have been damaged due to fallen trees, but no injuries were reported, police said.
Several houses were damaged when a mini cyclone hit Ehala Puliyankulam and Medagama in the Puttalam District last evening. Disaster Management Centre Puttalam District Coordinator Lt Col M. Mudannayaka told Daily Mirror that 4 houses have completely destroyed while several others have slightly damaged by the winds.
The roofs of a line of houses in the Mawussawa Estate in Nuwara Eliya were blown off in a cyclone on Sunday. There was continuous rain and hail in the area, residents said. Around 40 workers of the plantation displaced as a result of the cyclone were provided with cooked food by the estate management.
Unfortunately this poor country is probably the most disaster prone in the world. Rapid growth in population and a slow rate of growth of the economy have forced a substantial part of the ever increasing population to settle in areas too risky for human habitation.
