Despite the assurance of the deputy commissioner to develop a separate line to prevent the swelling of water bodies during rainy season in Basti Guzan area in Jalandhar district, no action has been taken by the concerned authorities. The deputy commissioner had given the assurance after a complaint was filed by Rajesh Kumar of Basti Guzan in the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC). Thereafter, the deputy commissioner assured that a separate line would be laid to check stagnation of water during monsoons and the complaint was disposed of in 2003.

Floods and landslide triggered by incessant rains claimed lives and wreaked havoc at various places in the country in the past two days. WHILE the Mumbai civic administration is dealing with an increase in cases of rain-related ailments this monsoon, the state health administration has had to tackle fewer instances of disease outbreaks so far. Since April, there have been only 15 deaths in the other parts of the state due to water-borne and vector-borne diseases. Nine of these deaths are due to water-borne diseases like gastroenteritis and diarrhoea, and six due to vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue.

Presently weather situation across the country has given the sign of 'Happy Monsoon', especially for the areas where the sowing of crops had started or was about to start. It is expected that the early monsoon, which approached different parts of the country, would create positive impact on the agriculture sector. Director Forecasting, National Weather Forecasting Centre Akram Anjum told that normal monsoon rains would occur this summer across the country. However, above normal rains would occur in eastern parts of the country, including Southern Punjab and Sindh.
