SRINAGAR : The residents of Kralgund, Batchi, Ashpora, Harwat and Muqam in Handwara held a strong protest demonstration against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) authorities for non-availability of water supply in these villages for past two weeks. They maintained that the non-availability of drinking water in the villages has forced them to consume contaminated water from Nallah Mawar due to which, at least 25 persons have already become victims of dehydration and other intestinal infections.

The state government which has initiated the modernisation of Nagarjunasagar Project main canals wants to extend water to every acre of the ayacut by taking up repairs to the minor and sub-minor canals too. The government decided to involve the water bodies such as water user associations and distributor committees for the repair works. A total of 72 water user associations and 12 distributory committees are under Tekulapalli circle in Khammam and Krishna districts and these bodies should complete the repair works of the canals before kharif.
Two villages, Beguli Buledi and Karim Dino Buledi, and hundreds of acres of agricultural land were inundated after Begari Canal developed a 100-foot wide breach near Garhi Khairo late on Sunday night. The affected villagers, Karim Bux Buledi, Ghulam Mohammad Buledi and other blamed irrigation officials for the breach and said that they did not take any notice despite several complaints about vulnerability of the canal's embankments, which ultimately caused them losses of millions of rupees. The breach had not been plugged till the filing of this report.

The Khulna City Corporation along with the district administration launches a drive on June 29 to pull down unauthorised structures along a river and 21 canals in and around the city. Complaint Cell of Irrigation and Power (I&P) Department has disposed of 1478 complaints out of the total 4761 complaints received by May 31st from farmers and other stakeholders. The cell also resolved 4330 other complaints within the stipulated period of time.
