Heavy rains with gusty winds and hailstrom lashed the city on Friday, raising water level at Leh Nullah up to 13 feet and caused power outages with low-lying parts of the city getting inundated. District administration, Civil Defence Department and Rescue 1122 remained on high alert to deal with any emergency. The Met Office recorded 26mm rain in Rawalpindi and 31mm in Islamabad while wind was blowing at a speed of 46 km/hour. The day was overcast. Heavy shower lasted from 11am to 3pm, bringing the mercury down to 25 Celsius and almost blocking all outdoor activities.

California "Water Bank" in Works Amid Drought
California's state government is forming a "water bank" to buy water for local water agencies at risk of shortages next year should a current drought persist, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Thursday. Schwarzenegger in June declared the most populous US state to officially be in drought and declared nine counties in its farm-rich Central Valley to be in a state of emergency because water supplies were so low after two years of below-average rainfall.

A high resolution daily gridded rainfall data set (1971-2005) for mesoscale meteorological studies
This paper, discusses the development of a very high resolution (0.50 x 0.50 degree) daily rainfall data set for mesoscale meteorological studies over the Indian region. The data set was developed using quality controlled rainfall data from more than 6000 rain-gauge stations over India. The analysis consists of daily rainfall data for all the seasons for the period 1971-2005.

Tracks hang over river - Rain forces course change
OUR CORRESPONDENT The railway tracks hang over the Kabli Jhora near Madhu Tea Estate. (Anirban Choudhury) Alipurduar, Aug. 28: A section of the railway tracks in Kalchini has been left hanging in the air after the soil beneath it was washed away by the Kabli Jhora, which suddenly changed course and swallowed the nearly 80-metre-long approach to the bridge that spans the river. In the past 24 hours, the rainfall recorded in Kalchini's Hasimara was 95mm and the downpour has increased water in almost all the rivers.
