An eight-day long " Fisheries Resources Development Programme-08" was launched in the port city on Sunday aimed at motivating people to contribute more in expanding fish cultivation. Chittagong District Administration and Chittagong Fisheries Department (CFD) jointly organised the function as per the national programme. Additional Deputy Commissioner (general) of Chittagong S M Alahi formally inaugurated the programme as the chief guest by freeing spices of Rui fish in Laldighi pond at 11 am in presence of a large number of fishermen.
Bangladesh could increase rice productivity from 30 to 60 per cent by using hybrid seeds, improvement of crop management and proper utilisation of fertilizer for attaining food security. "Open Market Sale (OMS) of rice, social safety net programmes and 100 day Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) are some of the effective measures taken by the government to ensure food security for the vulnerable people," said Xian Zhu, Country Director of the World Bank yesterday. He said at a workshop on 'Impacts of Food Crisis in Bangladesh' organised by the World Bank at its office in the city.
The government is likely to set up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to speed up local and foreign investments in the country, sources at Board of Investment (BoI) told The New Nation yesterday. A senior official of Board of Investment said that the Council of Advisers of the caretaker government last month approved in principle the creation of a SEZ. He said the office of the Chief Adviser is now scrutinizing the final draft of a proposed "Special Economic Zone Ordinance-2008", under which a Special Economic Zone Authority would be established.
A seminar on environment pollution organised by Nadi Banchao Andolan (Save the Rivers) was held at Multi purpose Hall room of Narail Govt. Victoria College on Saturday (August 23). The keynote paper titled 'The present condition of the rivers of Narail District' was presented by Dilara Begum, ex district education officer. A day-long orientation course for the graduate private medical practitioners on TB was held at the conference room of civil surgeon (CS) here on Monday with CS Dr. M Shamsul Haque in the chair. CS office organised it in cooperation with BRAC under National TB Control programme.
Finance and Planning Adviser Dr AB Mirza Azizul Islam yesterday stressed the need for adopting modern technology in the fisheries sector to increase fish production for meeting the country's demand. The government has laid special emphasis on the fisheries sector because of its vital role in alleviating poverty, he noted. The Finance adviser was addressing as a chief guest the inaugural function of the five- day long fisheries fair at Khamarbari Krishibid field in the capital. A total of 37 stalls have been set up at the fair to exhibit their products.
IN spite of substantial economic growth of the country during the last decade and some laudable initiatives to help the poor, a large section of population still face acute poverty and hunger. According to an estimate, about 36 million people still live below the poverty line. Bangladesh has set a target of achieving millennium development goals where eradication of poverty and hunger has been placed as the topmost aim.

Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has undertaken a Taka 81.21 crore plan to supply safe drinking water to the dwellers of Narayanganj replacing the existing water supply machineries and setting up of new deep tube-wells during the current fiscal year. According to Narayanganj maintenance, operation and distribution services (MODS) of WASA, of the total amount WASA will provide 12.5 per cent while the rest of the amount would be utilised from the annual development programmes (ADP).
Speakers at a day-long workshop on Thursday underscored the need for proper and hygienic management of medical waste to free the environment from pollution. They suggested for providing adequate training on waste management to all associated with the clinical and diagnostic activities to protect the environment from degradation. They underscored the need for the authorities and the individuals concerned to have the awareness of the harmful impact of medical waste in the interest of maintenance of sound environment.
