HC seeks report on illegal sand mining in coastal areas
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Thursday sought a report on illegal sand mining operations in coastal districts of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and neighbouring Navi Mumbai area. A bunch of PILs, including the one filed by city-based NGO Janhit Manch, has alleged that illegal sand mining is being carried out in several areas of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Navi Mumbai.

BMC earns Rs20 cr from carbon credits
Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will receive Rs20 crore in lieu of carbon credit from the Asian Development Bank. The BMC earned its carbon credit from the Gorai dumping ground, which becomes the first garbage dump in the country to earn 'carbon credits'. The BMC sold it to recover the money it spent on closing the dumping site.

State reduces child labour cut-off age
Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has reduced the cut-off age for child labour in hazardous industries from 18 to 14. A government resolution issued by the state labour department on March 2 stated that anyone employing children below 14 in hazardous industries will be prosecuted and fined Rs20,000 for each child employed. The state's "regressive" step has shocked child labour activists.
