Tirupati, Nov. 26: Several villages continue to be in the grip of fear as the herd of 13 elephants that damaged standing crop in Bangarupalem mandal in Chittoor district have not left the area. K. Raju PALANI: Even as two domesticated elephants have commenced on Monday their work to drive a herd of wild animals into interior forests, the task seems to be very tough for them to achieve. Wild animals that retreated into forests during a raid returned to the farms at night.
K. Raju PALANI: A herd of wild elephants has damaged standing crops in the lower Palani hills. Coconut, guava, banana and sugarcane crops in several acres have been destroyed in the past 10 days. All efforts, including crude methods adopted by local people, to drive away the elephants have gone in vein.
Agartala, Nov 5: The Tripura Government has decided to set-up an elephant reserve in the State to preserve the animal which had nearly disappeared due to large-scale poaching and migration to neighbouring Bangladesh. The latest census has shown that the population of the elephant has gone up from 38 in 2002, when the last census was taken, to 59 now, the State Board for Wild Life said.
