New Delhi Petrol price will be hiked by 30 paise per litre and diesel by 18 paise a litre after the government decided to increase the commission paid to petrol pump dealers. The petroleum ministry on Thursday decided to increase the dealer commission on petrol from R1.499 per litre to R1.799. On diesel, it has been hiked from 91 paise to R1.09 a litre, official sources said.

The government plans to relax rules for oil and gas exploration licences in time for the next bidding round, to attract global companies. “Before the next round (of exploration licensing) we would like to put in place a more investor-friendly regime, both for investment and from the point of view of pricing,” oil minister S Jaipal Reddy said. Companies have to get government approval for the formulae they use to work out selling prices for the oil and gas. India, the world’s fourth-biggest oil importer, wants to tap domestic supply to cut its ballooning import bill and widening budget deficit. So far, local companies have dominated auctions for Indian licences and the government wants to attract more foreign bidders.

Unable to get an exemption for the cooking gas cylinders used for the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in the wake of a steep hike in the prices of domestic gas, Union Human Resource Minister Kapil Sibal has suggested that the Petroleum Ministry consider providing subsidised LPG cylinders for the current fiscal year. “It might be preferable at this point to provide for subsidy as earlier for the LPG cylinders, instead of seeking approval for an increase in cooking cost which would necessitate revisiting allocation for the Mid-Day Meals Scheme and seeking Parliamentary approvals for the increased allocation,
The world’s largest coal producer Coal India Ltd (CIL) has expressed confidence that during the 12th Five Year Plan period it would be able to increase production by another 180 million tonne, though it would not be enough for the country’s energy requirements. “We had a cumulative production of 18 MT in over the last three five year plan periods. But in the 12th Plan Period itself, we are planning to augment annual production by another 180 million tonne.”S Narsing Rao , chairman and managing director of CIL, said.
