Normal life was crippled in Assam during the 12-hour bandh called by the AGP, BJP and supported by Left parties in protest against the unprecedented price rise of essential commodities, including the soaring cost of petroleum products. No major incidents were reported during the period. The bandh that started at five in the morning resulted in near-nil attendance in important government offices, while business and educational institutions remained closed, and the major highways saw a sharp fall in vehicular traffic.

With paddy season approaching, farmers have urged the government to either ensure 24-hour power supply to run their tubewells or provide fuel at subsidised rates. Justifying the stand of Punjab Chief Minister on not reducing the tax on petro-products, cabinet minister and senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia today said the state was not in a position to face the brunt of inefficient policies of the Union government. "States have limited sources to generate revenue and if taxes on petroleum products are reduced, they will adversely impact the development projects of the state," Kalia said.
Peak hour train services on Central Railway's main line were disrupted on Friday morning due to a "rail roko" protest by Shiv Sena workers at Mulund against the fuel price hike by the UPA government. Over 50 Sena activists led by a local corporator went on the tracks at the station's Nahur-end at about 9.30 am and blocked movement on all the four tracks. Train movement was completely halted and the GRP men dispersed the mob within a short while. However, the traffic movement was restored by 10 am, the railway police said.

The steep hike in fuel prices will cause a dent of Rs 20 crore in the coffers of the BEST per year. However, the undertaking does not intend to tax BEST commuters any further with higher fares.
