Strategy for Quality Health Insurance in Africa

Africa bears 24% of the global burden of disease, although it is home to only about 15% of the world’s population and accounts for 50% of global deaths from communicable diseases. An estimated $2.4 trillion in annual output is lost due to poor health. Against a backdrop of large and diverse needs, Africa’s health care infrastructure is underfunded by governments and donors. The estimated $4.5 billion in annual capital expenditure, falls short of the Bank-estimated financing need of $26 billion per year.
